Northome/Kelliher boys basketball coach charged with sex crimes

The head coach of the Northome/Kelliher high school boys basketball team has been charged with four counts of criminal sexual conduct.

Robert Jay Stueven, 39, of Mizpah, was charged Jan. 6 in Koochiching County District Court with two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, one count of second-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct. All are felonies.

Stueven, who is the head coach of the Northome/Kelliher boys basketball team and a student support assistant for Northome High School, was placed on paid leave Jan. 6, said Northome High School Principal Shannon Avenson.

According to the criminal complaint in the case, a teen-age girl told the Koochiching County Sheriff's Office last year that Stueven sexually assaulted her on five to six different occasions in the summer of 2006 when she was 14 years old.

If convicted of all charges, Stueven faces a maximum penalty of 95 years in prison and a $145,000 fine.
