Man involved in standoff with DL police committed to mental hospital for 6 months

The man who was involved in a 4½-hour standoff with police in Detroit Lakes two weeks ago has been committed to a hospital in Fergus Falls for treatment.

After a closed hearing held Friday in Becker County District Court, David William Buethner, 37, was found to be "mentally ill and chemically dependent."

A warrant was signed Tuesday committing Buethner to the custody of the Commissioner of the Department of Human Services for a period "not to exceed six months."

According to the warrant, the Becker County Sheriff's Office was to transport Buethner to the Community Behavioral Health Hospital in Fergus Falls for treatment.

As Buethner's case manager, Becker County Human Services will be required by the state to make reports on his progress.

Buethner was armed with a gun during the police standoff at Detroit Lakes' Pine to Palm Motel on Friday, Sept. 24, but he was eventually arrested without incident. He has not been criminally charged.
