LP man gets jail for strangling girlfriend

A Lake Park man was convicted and sentenced Monday in Becker County District Court on a felony charge of domestic assault-strangulation.

Kip William Borowski, 55, whose address is listed as P.O. Box 233, Lake Park, was given a prison sentence of 12 months and 1 day, stayed on conditions including completion of a 30-day jail sentence, payment of $1,085 in fines and fees, and up to five years of supervised probation.

Two additional misdemeanor counts of domestic assault that were filed in relation to the incident were dismissed at sentencing.

Borowski was accused of striking and attempting to strangle his girlfriend during a June 2 domestic dispute.

According to the criminal complaint, Borowski reportedly pushed the woman into a corner of the kitchen, choked her and hit her on the head with a closed fist. The woman later said she was unable to breathe. She became dizzy and fell to the floor, then tried to get back up, at which time Borowski reportedly resumed trying to choke her.

At that point, the woman allegedly grabbed a knife from the kitchen counter and stabbed Borowski in the left forearm. A 7-year-old child who was in the residence at the time of the alleged assault reportedly told Borowski to stop, but when he didn't, she ran to her grandmother's house to report the incident, after which officers showed up at the scene.

The complaint states that the woman suffered visible injuries to her upper right arm, face, neck and the back of her head.
