DL man jailed for violating order

A Detroit Lakes man was convicted and sentenced recently in Becker County District Court on a felony charge of violating a domestic abuse no contact order.

Arlan Ray Bergstrom Jr., 20, of 424 West Central Avenue, Detroit Lakes, was ordered to serve 18 months (2½ years) in prison, stayed on conditions including completion of up to five years’ supervised probation and a 30-day jail sentence. He was also ordered to complete an undetermined amount of community service in lieu of $1,160 in court fines and fees.

Bergstrom was also facing a related gross misdemeanor charge of giving a false name to a peace officer and a misdemeanor count of driving after license revocation in connection with the Nov. 22, 2012 incident in Becker County. Both charges were dismissed at sentencing.

According to the criminal complaint, Bergstrom was pulled over stopped for a traffic violation on County Highway 34 in Becker County on Nov. 22. He allegedly identified himself as “Tyler Kertscher,” and was cited for driving without a valid license.

Kertscher later came forward and said that he was not the person behind the wheel that night, and indicated that it may have been Bergstrom. The arresting officer then recognized Bergstrom from a photograph.

There was a passenger in the vehicle on Nov. 22 who was later identified as the woman he was forbidden to have contact with as a result of a Sept. 26 no contact order.
