Grand Marais man sentenced

A Grand Marais man was convicted and sentenced recently in Becker County District Court on a felony charge of third degree assault.

Jacob Tyler Kelahan, 22, formerly of Monticello, was ordered to serve 18 months (1½ years) in prison, stayed on conditions including completion of up to four years of supervised probation, 180 days in jail and payment of $1,160 in court fines and fees.

A second count of second degree assault with a dangerous weapon was dismissed at sentencing.

Kelahan was accused of assaulting an adult male victim outside the Speak Easy Restaurant on May 23, 2012.

According to the complaint, the alleged victim and another man had stepped outside the restaurant for a cigarette and were speaking with Kelahan when he reportedly struck the victim twice in the face while still holding a beer bottle in his hand.

The bottle broke after the second punch.

The victim suffered a broken nose, according to the complaint.
