Deaf Moorhead man charged with sexual assault

FARGO – A Moorhead man who cannot hear or speak faces felony charges after allegedly using a series of written and text messages to pick up another man in downtown Fargo, take him to a hotel, and then sexually assault him there.

Ortis Nashon Alderman, 37, has been charged in Cass County District Court with one count of felonious restraint, a Class C felony, and one count of Class B misdemeanor sexual assault.

According to court documents filed in the case:

Officers responded to a call June 15 from a hotel clerk at the front desk of the Motel 6 in Fargo, 1202 36th St. S., who told police there was a disturbance.

A police report states the victim told police that on the night of June 15 he and a female friend were downtown, where they met Alderman. The victim said they communicated with Alderman through text messages and by writing on a sheet of paper. The Forum does not typically identify victims in sexual assault reports.

The victim told a Fargo police officer that he and his friend spent some time with Alderman, then went to an apartment in the Fargo High Rise, 101 2nd St. S. The victim said he told police he wanted to go someplace where he could relax, have some beers and take a shower, so he and Alderman, who offered to pay for the hotel room, took a taxi to the Motel 6.

After they checked in, the victim said Alderman made sexual advances, after which the victim pushed Alderman away and told him he did not want to have any sexual contact. Alderman became upset and continued his advances.

The victim told police he tried to call for help, but no one heard him, and that Alderman tore off his pants and underwear and sexually assaulted him.

The victim said he got away from Alderman after the attack, and threw a bottle of beer out the hotel room window to get someone’s attention. The victim was eventually able to escape.

Officers collected photos at the scene and a written statement from Alderman.

Alderman appeared on both charges last week in Cass County Court, where his bail was set at $10,000 cash. His next court appearance is set for July 18.
