One dead, one in custody after stabbing at plant nursery

NEWPORT, Minn. -- One person died and another was in custody after a stabbing Thursday at Bailey Nurseries in Newport, police said.

Authorities were called to the nursery at 3:39 p.m. Thursday on a report of a stabbing victim, Newport Police Chief Curt Montgomery said in a statement.

The victim died and the suspect was in custody, Montgomery said. The St. Paul Pioneer Press reported that the victim was a nursery employee.

According to the Pioneer Press, St. Paul police said that relatives of the suspect, a man, drove him to the Ramsey County Jail in St. Paul, where he turned himself in. The suspect had suffered unspecified injuries and was taken to Regions Hospital for treatment. He was to be transferred to the Washington County Jail.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is assisting in the investigation. Further information was not immediately available.

Bailey Nurseries is headquartered on Bailey Road east of Interstate 494.
