Fargo man charged with burglary in cat theft

FARGO – A Fargo man is charged with felony burglary after allegedly awakening a friend early Saturday morning with texted photos of her stolen cat.

Jay Dean Sowl, 50, was charged Monday in Cass County District Court with one count of Class C felony burglary.

Court documents filed with the charges say police were called Saturday morning at about 1:55 to the home of the victim, Ashley Simon, 201 35th Ave. North.

North told police she and her boyfriend had been awakened to text messages from Sowl that included photos of her cat, Kevin.

The messages indicated Sowl had come to their apartment and taken Kevin back to his own residence

When police interviewed Sowl, who was intoxicated, he said he had meant it as a joke and told police, “I bought them beer all night. Ashley’s just drunk.”

Simon had not been with Sowl the previous evening, she told police. Nor was she intoxicated, the police report notes.

Sowl’s bail was set at $500.
