Seat belt stop in DL allegedly turns up 75 grams of marijuana

Kevin Allen Cross, 21, of 2014 10th Ave. E. No. 302, Williston, N.D., has been charged in Becker County District Court with felony fifth-degree controlled substance crime, possession, and gross misdemeanor driving after his license was canceled.

According to court records:

On Saturday, a Detroit Lakes police officer on routine patrol stopped his vehicle on Willow Street because occupants weren't wearing seat belts.

The officer allegedly smelled a strong marijuana odor from the vehicle, and when he mentioned this, a passenger handed over a small plastic bag of marijuana. There was also an open bottle of beer in the back seat.

Another officer arrived, and a search of the vehicle allegedly turned up a bag containing three smaller bags of marijuana. They weighed in at 24.72 grams, 26.45 grams and 27.98 grams. Officers also found $482 in cash.

A record check indicated Cross' driver's license had been canceled as inimical to public safety.

He appeared Monday before District Judge Joe Evans, who set cash bail at $1,000 and bond at $5,000. His next court appearance is Aug. 3.
