West Fargo police eye scam on Match.com
West Fargo police are investigating after a woman said she was taken for $28,000 by a scam artist who pretended on a dating Web site to be an enlisted U.S. soldier stationed in Afghanistan.
Detective Greg Warren said the woman - who he said is in her 40s - reported the scheme to police Monday, saying that a man she met on Match.com asked for money to pay taxes on jewelry stores he said his parents bequeathed to him.
Warren said the woman, whom police aren't publicly identifying, didn't get suspicious until she investigated the man's military record and found a soldier by a similar name in Idaho.
It could be a tough case to crack because the cash was wired to Ghana and other foreign locations and could have been sent anywhere from there, Warren said. If a suspect is found, he could face felony theft and identity theft charges, Warren said.
"We're going to follow up on it and see where it takes us," he said.
