Man found innocent of strangulation

Tad Isaac Butcher, 27, of 1060 West Lake Drive, Detroit Lakes has been found innocent by a jury in Becker County District court of two felony charges of domestic assault by strangulation.

According to court records, on March 9 a Detroit Lakes police officer responded to a report of a possible assault.

He found a woman despondent, quiet, softly crying and shaking. She had allegedly been in a romantic relationship with Butcher for about a year.

On March 8 and March 9, Butcher allegedly assaulted her intermittently while drinking, grabbing the collar of her sweatshirt and dragging her across the kitchen floor, and pushing her up against a wall and slamming her head into the wall several times, once hard enough to leave a hole in the drywall.

Twice, he allegedly smothered her by putting his hand over her nose and mouth so that she could not breathe. She almost passed out.

The police officer observed numerous bruises on both sides of her neck.

The jury reached a verdict of innocent on both counts Tuesday, in a trial presided over by Judge Joe Evans. The defense attorney was Simon George of Detroit Lakes. The prosecutor was Assistant Becker County Attorney Gretchen Thilmony.
