Naytahwaush man sentenced for DWI

A Naytahwaush man was sentenced June 2 in Becker County District Court on a felony charge of first degree driving while intoxicated.

Cyril Lee Thompson, 35, of Box 2218, Naytahwaush, was given a prison sentence of 48 months, stayed on conditions including up to seven years of supervised probation, 180 days in jail and payment of $1,620 in fines (an additional $3,000 in fines was stayed). An additional gross misdemeanor charge of driving after license cancellation was dismissed.

According to court records, the charges against Thompson stemmed from a July 24, 2009 incident in which a tribal police officer allegedly came upon the vehicle Thompson was driving parked and obstructing traffic on County Road 24, about 2 miles north of County Road 143. A can of beer was on the dashboard. Thompson claimed that he was out of gas and was waiting for fuel to be brought to him. He then denied being the driver and refused to perform field sobriety tests. After being arrested, he also refused alcohol testing at the Becker County Jail.
