Birding club to hold Christmas bird count

Every December since 1990, the Lakes Area Birding Club has conducted a Detroit Lakes Christmas Bird Count.

This year’s event is set to take place on Saturday, Dec. 14, and runs “from midnight to midnight,” said organizer Nancy Henke.

“Our area is a circle, 15 miles in diameter, within a 7 ½-mile radius of Detroit Lakes,” she added.

The count area is divided into four different zones, with groups of volunteers going out in cars to cover each of the zones.

“We try to have an experienced birder in each group,” Henke said, though the count is open to anyone who has an interest.

If you would like to participate, please contact Henke at 218-847-4004.

“You don’t have to sign up,” she said. “This year, our goal is to identify at least 41 different species — the last time that happened was in 1999.”
