Master Gardeners in Becker County have been making a difference for over 30 years.

At a recent meeting the following Master Gardeners were recognized for their years of service: Ardella Triebenbach and Linda Perrine (30 years), Cindy Hendrickson (10 years), Renee Zok (15 years), Leslie Holen (1000 hours) and missing from photo was Alice Wenzel (10 years).

There are currently 18 local people who are qualified as Master Gardeners after taking a required course at the University of Minnesota.

The Master Gardeners have completed their 4th year and continue to participate in recording sessions for TV 3’s weekly series called “Master Gardeners Rambling Rose”.

Episodes from earlier years can be viewed on the You Tube Website at:

The gardeners also partner with the City of Detroit Lakes in providing 15 community garden plots. Another event they sponsor is the Annual Plant Sale scheduled this year for Saturday, May 24th starting at 8 a.m. till 11 a.m. at the Detroit Lakes City Park on South Washington Ave (north of the Pavilion).

They also donate time to Becker County working on community projects, teaching educational programs and answering questions they receive. During the growing season Master Gardeners offer free Plant, Pest and Gardening Clinics every Monday (May-September) and Friday (June-August) from 9 a.m. to 12 Noon at the Becker County Extension Office which is located at 1120 8th St SE Detroit Lakes. The first clinic this year will be held on May 5th.

At these clinics they are available to answer questions about trees, shrubs, insects, home garden and lawns.  They provide helpful solutions and ideas to help answer your questions.

If they unable to answer your questions, the Master Gardeners are only a phone call away from the University of Minnesota horticulturists for additional help.

The Master Gardener program is sponsored by the Extension Service of the University of Minnesota.

For more information on the any of the projects and events mentioned please call Linda at the Extension Office at 846-7328.
