Position changes at DL School

Lots of changes are happening on the administrative front for the Detroit Lakes School District.

At Monday night’s school board meeting, current Roosevelt Elementary Principal Renee Kerzman was introduced as the new director of curriculum, instruction and technology. She will assume the duties of current Education Director Lowell Niklaus when he retires at the end of the school year.

Applications for the elementary principal’s position at Roosevelt will remain open until April 28.

Interviews for the Detroit Lakes High School principal’s position, meanwhile, will begin at the conclusion of the district’s Easter break next week.

Alternative Learning Center (ALC) Director Lisa Weber has been serving as interim principal at the high school since the resignation of Steve Morben from the position late last summer.

In other personnel matters, the board voted in favor of the termination and non-renewal of contracts for probationary teachers Dana Motschenbacher and Laura Standal.

Also at Monday night’s meeting, the board voted to amend this year’s school calendar to forgive a student make-up day on May 27, making Friday, May 23 the last day of classes for students. May 27 will now be a teacher work day.

Superintendent Doug Froke said during his report that the district is close to reaching an agreement with Minnesota State Community & Technical College to house the district’s ALC program on M State’s Detroit Lakes campus, beginning in the fall of 2015.

The ALC is currently located on the third floor of Detroit Lakes’ Historic Holmes Theatre; Froke said a decision on the proposal is expected to be made at the May board meeting.

The board approved Froke’s superintendent evaluation on Monday night as well. Board Chair Ladd Lyngaas said, “The board found Superintendent Froke to meet or exceed expectations in all areas.”
