New airboat to the rescue
Though it may look like something out of the bayou, it’s something much more useful for Minnesotans.
Through a federal water grant, the Becker County Sheriff’s Office was able to purchase a rescue boat, which is like the airboats used in the southern part of the United States in swamps. Up here, though, the boats are used for rescues on lakes without accesses or on frozen lakes.
Sheriff Kelly Shannon said that with the smooth, rounded build of the bottom of the boat, it can be used on ground, snow, ice or water — it will go anywhere.
“This is really going to be helpful with thin ice,” Shannon said.
The sheriff’s deputies are training alongside the Detroit Lakes Fire Department to learn the ins and outs of the newest addition. The airboat is also being housed at the fire hall.
