Let's Go Fishing seeks support, volunteers
The Detroit Lakes Area Chapter of Let's Go Fishing with Seniors is getting ready to launch its second season -- and the organizers could use a little help.
President Dave Hochhalter said that while the first season was an outstanding success, the chapter is in need of support -- in the form of both volunteers and donations -- to continue that momentum.
"Every little bit helps," Hochhalter noted.
All donations are tax deductible -- the national Let's Go Fishing with Seniors is a 501(c)3 organization -- and volunteer opportunities abound, said board member John Fuglesten.
People are needed to lead or assist with fishing and scenic boat excursions; help with special chapter events and fund-raising; serve on the board of directors; work on promotions, marketing and Web site enhancement; keep records; maintain equipment, scheduling/coordinating and more.
And while the organization has received support from SJE Rhombus, Arvig Communications, Golden Living Center, Cormorant Lakes Sportsman's Club, Lakes Liquor, the Paul Sukke Memorial, Muskies, Inc., Shooting Star Casino, BTD Manufacturing and more, donations are still needed.
"We've taken out a loan to pay for the pontoon and equipment," Hochhalter noted, adding that besides monthly payments on that loan, funding is needed for equipment maintenance and operational expenses.
In 2008, more than 23 volunteers worked over 600 hours on fishing trips, scenic excursions, training, fund-raising, special events and other activities of the organization.
A total of 10 excursions serving over 60 area seniors were funded in 2008, and the organization hopes to expand that number to over 30 trips and 250 seniors in 2009.
Let's Go Fishing with Seniors was created to enrich the lives of people age 55 and older through free fishing and boating excursions which strengthen communities, build relationships and create memories.
"Our program returns a sense of freedom to the lives of our guests, provides a safe opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, and offers time to socialize with peers and meet new friends," wrote Hochhalter in a press release.
He added that the program also benefits the volunteers who get to watch participants enjoy an outdoor outing on the water, and spending time with friends.
