Lions helping to can eye problems

PIPPI MAYFIELD/TRIBUNE Lions Club members Carol and Jim Granger, left, and Armand Radke, right, and Speak Easy's Michael Mercil are ready for can donations from the public. Money from recycling the cans will help with the Lions' Eye for Mexico program.

A trailer has been placed in the Speak Easy parking lot for aluminum can recycling. Proceeds will benefit the Detroit Lakes Lions Club.

"The Cormorant Lions had (a trailer) and we're heard of other clubs using it to make money," Lions member Jim Granger said.

So he and Lions member Armand Radke found a trailer, doctored and painted it up and got Speak Easy's Michael Mercil's blessing to park it in the parking lot for the public to have easy access to it.

"Donations go to Eyes for Mexico," Radke said.

Eyes for Mexico is a twice a year program where Lions members travel to Caba San Lucas and Mazatlan, Mexico, to help locals in need of eyeglasses. Money from the can recycling will help pay to ship glasses from the United States to Mexico.

The next trips for the Lions are Oct. 10-17 for Caba San Lucas and March 13-27 for Mazatlan.

The Lions Club meets the third Tuesday of each month in the Speak Easy.
