Motorcycling on the ice -- Feb. 12 in DL

STUDDED RACING TIRES will allow local motorcyclists to compete even in the dead of winter.

Motorcycle enthusiasts don't have to wait for summer to get the adrenaline rush that comes along with a good race.

For the first time in Detroit Lakes, Jake LeClair is bringing a three-hour endurance race to the ice in front of the Holiday Inn Saturday, Feb. 12.

Up to four riders can form a team during the relay-style race and do as many laps as they can in three hours.

"When I moved up here, I saw the location right away, it was a perfect spot," said LeClair, who moved to Detroit Lakes in October.

Teams from Wisconsin, North Dakota, Iowa and all over Minnesota are expected to participate in the race. LeClair said he hopes to make it an annual event during Polar Fest weekend.

To ride on the ice, the dirt bikes must have special rear studded tires that LeClair is able to fix up. They must have 1,000 to 1,200 screws in the back and 750 to 1,000 in the front.

Because parts for the tires are not readily available here, LeClair said he had to find another way to help riders get ready for the ice.

"I had to set myself up as a distributor so I can order the stuff and build the tires myself," he said

It takes five to 8 hours to build the tires that can only be ridden on ice, once they hit pavement they're ruined.

So far, 20 teams have signed up to participate in Saturday's endurance race with room for more to pre-register up to the day before.

"It's really hard to say how many teams we'll have for sure until the race day," LeClair said.

The cost to register is $100 per team with $20 off for those who pre-register. Gates will open at 8 a.m. and practice will begin at 11 a.m., then the race will start at noon and last until about 4 p.m.

The top 10 teams will win trophies and the top three will also get cash prizes of $300 for first place, $200 for second and $100 for third. For more information, call LeClair at 320-309-9969 or Scott Laudon at 218-234-7538.
