Resurfacing project on Highway 59 in Detroit Lakes begins August 6
DETROIT LAKES — Motorists on Highway 59 south of Detroit Lakes will encounter road closures and detours beginning Monday, Aug. 6, as crews begin a resurfacing project from Willow Street in Detroit Lakes to just south of the Otter Tail County line.
The first stage of the project will begin after WE Fest on Aug. 6, and traffic will be detoured to County Road 22 and County Road 6. This detour (Detour B) will remain in place through the end of August.
After Labor Day, traffic will be detoured to County Road 17, as crews work on the stretch of Hwy. 59 between County Road 17 and County Road 22. This detour (Detour A) will remain in place through mid-October.
Along with the detours, motorists will encounter daily lane closures on Hwy. 59 at the south and north ends of the project. Prior to Labor Day, crews will be working under traffic on the stretch of highway south of the Otter Tail County line, up to County Road 17. After Labor Day, they will move to the north end of the project between County Road 6 and Willow Street.
A pilot car and flaggers will control traffic in the areas where crews are working. Motorists are urged to slow down in work zones and never enter a roadway that has been blocked with barriers or cones.
Businesses, residents and motorists can view the detour map and keep up to date with the schedule on the project website, www.mndot.gov/d4/projects/hwy59dl.
Mark Sand and Gravel Company, of Fergus Falls, is the primary contractor for the $5.2 million resurfacing project. Upon completion of the project, motorists will experience a smoother road surface.
