Extension Service offers food safety classes in Moorhead

The University of Minnesota Extension Service is offering two courses to help food service establishments meet the educational requirement for certified food managers. A third class will be offered for food service employees who are not in a management position.

The initial certification course, called ServSafe, will be offered on Tuesday, July 15, 2008, in the Travelodge and Suites in Moorhead. The class will run from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with the exam following at 4:30.

Participants must attend all day to be eligible to take the certification exam. This course includes information about safe food preparation, handling, sanitation and prevention of foodborne illnesses. Registration is required by July 1.

Serve It Up Safely is a four-hour renewal course for certified managers. Certified food managers need four hours of continuing education credits within three years of becoming certified.

University of Minnesota Extension educators and University specialists developed this renewal course that meets these criteria.

The Serve It Up Safely course will also be held in the Travelodge and Suites on Tuesday, July 15 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration is due by July 1.

Food Safety Employee Training is a 2-hour course for food service workers that cover the basic requirements for safe food handling. A single outbreak of foodborne illness can easily cost a food service operation $75,000.

Food Safety Employee Training is one way food service establishments can proactively work towards preventing such losses. This course will be Monday, July 14, from 2-4 p.m. in the Travelodge and Suites. Registration is due June 30.
