Frazee student earns Academic All-State honors; Teacher of Year named

The Frazee-Vergas School Board recognized leaders in the district, both staff and student, and discussed finances at its regular meeting this week.

Elementary teacher Andrew Mekalson and high school teacher Julie Wake were recognized as Teacher of the Year for their respective schools.

While it's peers that select the teachers who will win the honor each year, Cheney said the student's enthusiasm when Mekalson received his award was a testament to how well he is liked.

Student Daniel Janu was honored for being named an Academic All-State Individual. There are only 14 students throughout Minnesota in the 2A division awarded the distinction, and Janu, a football player, is one of them. He is only the second student from Frazee-Vergas to earn the honor.

Coach and teacher Jim Rader said it's a "tremendous honor" for Janu to be named to the all-state list: Members are selected by the Minnesota Football Coaches Association.

For Janu to make the cut, Rader said, "he made a pretty substantial impact." The average grade point average for the 14 students selected is 3.85.

"He's not just performing as an athlete on the field, but also putting up academically, too."
