Shelstad hat trick leads Otters over Lakers
Fergus Falls junior Aaron Shelstad recorded a hat trick to lead the Otters to a 4-1 victory over Detroit Lakes in the season opening boys hockey game for both teams Saturday afternoon at Kent Freeman Arena.
Nick Lund gave the Lakers an early lead at four-minutes, 37-seconds of the first period on assists from Will Green and Collin Ginnaty.
That would be the lone puck Detroit Lakes would get by Otter senior goalie Drew Luhning.
Luhning made 27 saves in a game the Lakers outshot Fergus Falls 28-21.
DL made a big push in the third period on three separate power play opportunities putting 12 shots on Luhning but the Otter senior stood tall in net.
Logan Wentworth setup Shelstad’s first goal at the 14-minute mark of the first period and Shelstad scored unassisted at 16:27 to steal the Lakers early momentum and lead 2-1.
Chase Jensen scored less than two minutes into the second period on a Nate Longtin assist and Shelstad got his hat trick with an unassisted tally at 8:42.
Neither team capitalized on the man advantage. DL was 0-5; Fergus Falls was 0-3.
The Otters kept the Lakers top line of Trey Seebold, Will Stowman and Ben Unruh off the scoresheet.
Laker goalie Ryan Wheeler made 17 saves.
The teams have met in the season opener since 2014 and the Otters have captured all four games.
DL (0-1) has three home games this week beginning Tuesday, Nov. 28 at 6 p.m. versus Grafton-Park River (0-1).
