Man sentenced for helping shoplift $1,135 from DL Walmart
Samuel James Staples III, 33, of rural Cass Lake has been sentenced in Becker County District Court with felony theft.
According to court records, on May 17 at 9:22 a.m. he and a woman were allegedly involved in the theft of $613 worth of items from the Detroit Lakes Walmart store, including two TV sets, a Blu-ray DVD player, and a Stanley tool set.
He wheeled his shopping cart to the Garden Center, went out a fire door, and was met there by the woman driving a Monte Carlo. Together they loaded the goods into the car and took off. The two also stole $438 worth of items from the DL Walmart on Dec. 11, 2016. The total from both incidents is $1,135.
Walmart security personnel were able to identify the two suspects after similar thefts at Walmart stores in Park Rapids, Bemidji, Grand Rapids and Wadena, where the suspects went out a fire door with expensive merchandise. The two were arrested May 30 after a theft at the Park Rapids Walmart.
On June 19, Staples appeared before District Judge Gretchen Thilmony, who sentenced him to 19 months in prison at St. Cloud, stayed five years. He was ordered to serve 315 days in jail, with credit for 315 days served. He must pay a $1,000 fine, with $500 of that stayed two years, and $660 in court fees and get a chemical dependency evaluation and follow the recommendations, including aftercare. He was ordered to stay out of Walmart for one year and was placed on supervised probation for five years.
