Frazee man sentenced for domestic strangulation
Branden Ray Nelson, 22, of Detroit Lakes, has been sentenced in Becker County District Court for felony domestic assault - strangulation.
A misdemeanor domestic assault charge was dropped in a plea agreement.
According to court records, at 12:25 a.m. on March 7, a Frazee police officer responded to a domestic assault report at a Frazee residence. A woman there told the officer that Nelson, her boyfriend, had thrown her around and she had hit her head hard. She also reported that he had choked her with his hands around her neck and she had not been able to breathe.
On June 27, Nelson appeared before District Judge Gretchen Thilmony, who stayed imposition of sentence and placed him on supervised probation for four years.
He was ordered to serve 45 days in jail, with credit for four days served, and must pay a $1,000 fine and $1,165 in court fees. He was ordered to get a chemical dependency evaluation and follow the recommendations, including aftercare, and to get domestic abuse treatment-counseling.
