Rotary Interact members busy in the community

Interact members from Detroit Lakes High School are working hard as volunteers in the community. Their most recent activities include helping with the Salvation Army Bell Ringing at the Central Market and participating in the Parade of Lights.

Cara Berger, the current club secretary, says she enjoys working with friends as a volunteer.

"We also get to attend Rotary meetings and speak with Rotarians," she said. "It is good to learn to speak with a variety of people from a wide range of backgrounds."

Cara also attended RYLA, (Rotary's Youth Leadership Award camp). We did leadership and trust exercises with Rotarians and made some lifelong friends. "It was great," she said.

Emily Ritchie, Family and Consumer Science teacher at Detroit Lakes High School, is currently the club's "Adult Advisor."

"They are a great group of young people to work with," she said. "Other activities they have been involved include the High School Homecoming parade, Roses for Rotary (preparing the roses, selling and acting as mascots), road-side ditch clean-up, volunteering at the local food shelf, and a bake sale fundraiser."

Last year's Interact club donated $1,150 towards the "TeacHaiti" project. TeacHaiti provides tuition to help educate youth in Haiti where many cannot afford to attend school.

Interact is Rotary International's service club for young people aged 14 to 18. Interact in Detroit Lakes is co-sponsored by both the Noon and Breakfast Rotary Clubs. John Flatt, President of Breakfast Rotary, said the clubs are sponsored by Rotary which provides support and guidance, but that they are self-governing and self-supporting.

"Interact members develop leadership skills and personal integrity, demonstrate helpfulness and respect for others, understand the value of individual responsibility and hard work and advance understanding and goodwill. We are very proud of our local club," he said.

There are currently 55 Interact members who meet the second and fourth Thursday of each month. Club officers are President, Kathryn Schumacher; President-Elect, Joelle Langworthy; Treasurer, Alex Guetter; and Secretary, Cara Berger.
