Opinion: Keep our turkeys on the Thanksgiving menu

Some say it is only a movie, but the movie “Free Birds” looks a little more like revisionists taking a swing at a Thanksgiving tradition.

In this movie opening today, the plot is described as “two turkeys from opposite sides of the track put aside their differences and team up to travel back in time to change the course of history - and get turkey off the Thanksgiving menu for good.”

The initial reviews on this 3-D animated describe the film as amusing and likeable. We’ll go along that far.

But as to the goal of getting turkey off the Thanksgiving menu?

We protest such a mission, especially in changing such a historical family tradition.

There are very healthy benefits to a good turkey on Thanksgiving.

  • You get your protein - 32 grams of protein in a 4-ounce turkey serving.
  • You get your B vitamins as turkey is a nutrient rich food.
  • You get the benefit from less saturated fat.
  • And it just tastes good.

So to the film star turkeys Reggie and Jake, you just leave our Thanksgiving turkey tradition alone. Don’t even think of touching that.

To the rest of the Americans, keep the turkey on the Thanksgiving menu.

After your dinner, you can go enjoy this pleasant-enough holiday film “Free Birds.” The film animators do a good job reflecting on the most appreciated species in west central Minnesota. — West Central Tribune of Willmar
