Time to start planning a fishing trip to the lake

Let's Go Fishing has set a goal of hosting 50 trips this year. They have also added a Youth Initiative to get youth and inter-generation fishing trips started.

The Detroit Lakes Area Chapter of Lets Go Fishing is excited about its 2010 season. Volunteers are preparing for record setting fishing and boating excursions this summer.

Lets Go Fishing will provide free fishing and boating activities for area seniors, veterans and youth. Detroit Lakes area sponsors provide the rods, reels, tackle, refreshments, snack, pontoon, gas and life jackets.

The organization's experienced and trained volunteers provide for a safe and fun experience on the water. With the new "Youth Initiative," Lets Go Fishing also looks to host intergenerational event opportunities. These could be grandparent-grandchild or with senior groups and youth groups.

The Detroit Lakes Area Chapter looks to host over 50 trips this summer, which would double the number of trips in 2009. With the increased expected demand, Lets Go Fishing encourages area senior, veteran and youth groups to schedule their trips in advance.

Outings can be scheduled weekly beginning in the spring and running through the summer and fall by calling John Fuglesten at 218-844-5106.

Each excursion is approximately one to three hours, depending on the group.

There is no cost to participants except for a current fishing license (if applicable). Senior care facilities may qualify for a waiver of the license fee though application to the state DNR.

With the new Youth Initiative, interest has been shown from our Boys and Girls Club, 4-H clubs and church youth groups. Several of these groups are scheduling multiple trips for the summer.
