Angels fall below .500

The Detroit Lakes Angels picked up a Hi-10 League win Friday night with an 11-inning 5-4 victory over Bluffton.

The Angels (7-8) also had a Region championship rematch with Bertha Saturday, losing 9-4, while falling to New York Mills Sunday 12-1.

In the 11-inning affair against the Braves, the Angels won the game as Phil Kirchner started the bottom of the 11th by smacking a double.

Mark Gulseth walked to put runners at first and second, as Taylor Fuhs hit a ground ball to second base which was flipped to the shortstop at the base with Kirchner rounding third and streaking for home.

The throw was to the first base side of the plate and Kirchner slid in safely for the win.

The game was forced to extra innings after the Angels tied it in the seventh inning, on an RBI single by Taylor Fuhs, scoring Kirchner.

Brock Johnson started on the mound for DL and lasted five frames, giving up seven hits and four earned runs.

Gulseth picked up the victory by pitching the final six innings and blanking the Braves, while allowing five hits and striking out two.

The Angels traveled to Bertha Saturday afternoon for a rematch of last year’s teams in the league championship game, which the Blazers won, and the Region Championship game, in which DL prevailed.

Bertha scored 4 times in the first, added another in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead.

They built an 8-0 lead with a run in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh.

The Angels scored two in the eighth frame to cut the lead, as a sacrifice fly by Derek Zitzow scored Kirchner and a fielder’s choice scored Gulseth.

After the Blazers added a run in 8th the Angels scored two more in the ninth, as a bases loaded walk to Doug Dickey scored Chris Gilson and an error plated Bryan Buhr.

Pat Riewer of the Blazers killed the rally for the Angels with a diving catch on a line drive up the middle with runners on first and second.

The Angels ended the three-game weekend with a 12-1 loss in New York Mills.

The Millers pounced early with a run in the first and a back-breaking six in the third frame.

DL was held to four hits, while New York Mills produced 15.

Gilson took the loss on the mound.

The Angels will be playing at Fergus Falls Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. start.
