Strong versatility and some young energy will be the two virtues which will propel the Detroit Lakes swimming and diving team into the 2013 season.

The Lakers will be led by their three seniors in Katie Arens, Madalyn Schiller and Alyssa Anderson, while a host of underclassmen will fill out the ranks.

“A lot of the swimmers worked hard in the summer and many of our younger swimmers have a strong background in the sport,” said DL head coach Carol McCarthy. “It’s a very versatile group which can swim any event and the depth is good.

“The energy level in practice has been very high.”

The Lakers do return a two-time state diver, junior Kyley Foster, who has some lofty goals to reach after having a very strong 2012 campaign on the board.

The junior class will also be strong and heavy in numbers. There are six juniors on the team, with the majority of them swimming since sixth grade.

Those juniors include Grace Livermore, Jocelyn Skoda, Foster (diver), Rayna Barnett, Samantha Hanson and newcomer Berit Ramstad-Skoyles.

The roster also has a good contingent of seventh and eighth graders, who will be looked upon to contribute, too.

Seventh grader Sydney Gulon is coming off a spectacular Sunfish Club swimming career and will be one of DL’s top freestylers.

“Syd is just versatile and a solid freestyle swimmer,” McCarthy said. “I’ve never had a seventh grader like her, one who knows how to swim a race. She’s been in a lot of USA Junior high level races.”

Livermore had a strong ending to the season, as did her freshman sister Clara and both will be contributors to team points, as well.

Abby Smith will be important in the relays, in which the Lakers should be competitive in.

Several of the younger girls, such as freshman McKenna Krengel, will also improve the distance races, while the strength will be in the freestyles.

The Lakers’ schedule is heavy with section opponents, and DL will host the Mid-State Conference meet Friday, Oct. 25, inside the BTD Aquatics Center.

DL opens the season at home with the Laker Relays, which is Monday, starting at noon.
