Girls Tennis: DL loses to Spuds in close match

Despite playing a strong home opener, the Detroit Lakes girls’ tennis team dropped both matches in Monday’s triangular to fall to 1-2 in duals on the season.

The Lakers played a talented Moorhead team tough, losing 4-3, and also lost to Mid-State Conference power Staples-Motley 7-0.

No. 1 singles player Dani Unruh collected DL’s lone singles win with a straight set victory over Brianna Storm, 6-2, 6-0.

The doubles had two victories, as top duo India Fritz and Emily Seebold downed Ally Grimley and Erika Hoaby in close sets 6-2, 7-6.

The third win came from No. 2 doubles team Carolyn Kinney and Devree Bunnis as they went three sets and won a marathon tiebreaker 15-13 over Hannah Wold and Marin Tollefson.

The Spuds duo took the first set 7-5, but the DL twosome rebounded with a 6-0 in the second.

“We were happy with our performance,” said DL head coach Tanner Beauchman. “Moorhead is a good team and we played them tough. The top of our lineup picked up big wins and Dani played an excellent match at her No. 1 singles.

“Carolyn and Devree played a really tight match and showed some mental toughness, pulling out a win.”

The Cardinals ended up being a very tough opponent, as the visitors took all matches in straight sets.

Unruh played state-ranked Mikayla Wing tough at No. 1 singles, losing 6-0, 6-4.

“Staples-Motley has strong players at the top of their lineup and they are very deep,” Beauchman said. “I was proud of Dani. She was able to make adjustments to her game to push Wing in the second set.”

The Lakers will travel to Park Rapids for a triangular against the Panthers and Crosby-Ironton, starting at 11 a.m.

They will host a triangular Friday with Fergus Falls and Thief River Falls, starting at 10 a.m., as well.
