Football: Indians keep on chugging along with another big win

Good field position, created by four turnovers and stingy defense, set the table for the potent Mahnomen offense Friday, as the Indians improved to 2-0 with a 42-14 thumping of Red Lake County.

Even though the Indians had five turnovers of their own, the defense made up for it by limiting RLC to 114 total yards, 61 coming on the ground.

“Once again, we had a lot of kids in on tackles,” said Mahnomen head coach John Clark Jr. “The turnovers and field position set our offense up for short scoring drives. We just had trouble hanging onto the ball; luckily, our defense gave us the ball right back.”

Jon Francis led the way for the Indians on defense with seven tackles from off the bench.

“He was very active and played well,” Clark said of Francis.

Indians’ running back Austin Reitan gouged the RLC defense for 104 rushing yards on 14 carries, while scoring three touchdowns.

Bob Bjorge added 67 yards and two touchdowns.

On the game, Mahnomen had 343 yards of rushing for a 6.7 yards per carry average.

Mahnomen will next host Frazee (2-0), which was a 12-0 winner over Fertile-Beltrami Friday.
