With the Detroit Lakes Legion Post 15 baseball team experiencing a numbers crunch, a rebuilding year with plenty of youth will be in store this summer.

The Post 15 squad will have just four players who played varsity baseball this past spring, with the rest of the team being predominately 16 year olds.

“My philosophy will be to have the kids improve,” said Legion head coach Mitch McLeod. “Yes, at this level you want to win, but the main goal is to improve.”

The Legion team will be led by varsity players Connor Johnson, Sam Voz, Sam Beck and Chandler Gray. Senior Brett Nephew also will be in the mix.

Voz and Johnson will be the two top pitchers for Post 15, while a host of other young arms will get opportunities to see action on the mound.

Those include Matt Haire, Kavon Schumacher, Beck, Matt Berglund and Gray.

“Most of them pitched JV ball, but basically all of our players will get a chance to pitch,” McLeod said. “The three elements of good pitching is location, movement and velocity.”

Defense will be key, as well, with versatility also playing a part.

“Players will have to play at least two positions and they will be moving around,” McLeod said. “We are focusing on the fundamentals.”

There will be one 15-year-old who will be playing in the middle of the field in Kai McLeod, Mitch’s son, who saw time last year after DL struggled with numbers.

The infield will have plenty of gloves, with Nephew and Haire sharing duties at first base, along with Josh Bollig, while the middle of the infield will consist of Berglund, Chase Morris, Bollig, Kai McLeod and Haire.

Nephew and Voz will each see time at the corners, while Beck and Andrew Dahl will take on catching duties, along with Corey Hanson.

Outfielders will include Gray, Bollig, Johnson, Chase Metelak and Dahl.

The schedule also has been pared down with the low numbers out, with DL taking part in three tournaments, including the Water Carnival Tourney in DL, which is July 17-20.

McLeod’s graduated sons and now college players, Connor and Kirk, will also be assistant coaches this season.
