There was a common occurrence in the Detroit Lakes Legion Post 15 baseball team’s two wins in the Wood Bat Tournament in Perham this past weekend, and that was solid defense.

The lack of errors was the key to success for DL’s two wins over Ottertail Central and Twin Valley/Ulen-Hitterdal, while too many miscues led to their lone loss to Fergus Falls.

“We had some big errors against Fergus Falls and that was the difference between our win over OTC,” said DL head coach Mitch McLeod. “Our young kids just need to learn how to compete. They get frustrated when things don’t go their way and the mistakes compound after that. It’s just a youth thing, they will need to learn how to get past that.”

Sam Voz got back on track from the mound after pitching a complete-game 1-0 shutout win over OTC Saturday.

Voz finished with five strikeouts, while Connor Johnson picked up the lone RBI with a one-run double in the fifth inning.

Johnson and Matt Haire each had two hits in the victory.

“Sam pitched well and had some very good defense behind him,” McLeod said. “He only had one walk in the game and was throwing strikes.”

DL lost to Fergus Falls 3-1 with Johnson on the mound, with the lone run again coming in the fifth inning.

Chase Metelak and Chase Morris each walked to lead the frame off, with Kai McLeod advancing them on a sacrifice bunt.

Johnson again came up with the RBI hit and finished the game going 3-4.

All three of Johnson’s runs against Fergus Falls were unearned, with DL committing several errors.

Post 15 took an 11-6 win over Twin Valley/U-H, with Johnson and Voz each gaining two hits, with DL going for 10 total.

Haire went five innings, allowing just two runs, while Matt Schouviller pitched the final two innings.

DL committed just one error in the win.

Post 15 will play in the Fargo Tournament over the weekend, starting Friday against one of the top teams in Midwest in Blue Springs, Mo.

They will also play Chanhassen, Tri-City, Shoreview and close out against Fargo Sunday at 2 p.m.
