Angels survive; start quest for state berth Friday vs. Bluffton

The Detroit Lakes Angels amateur baseball team had two homers by Nick Esala and Kirk McLeod to help their team over Sebeka 18-9 to advance in the 14C Regional tournament in Dent last Friday.

The Angels couldn’t hold the momentum Saturday, though, losing to Long Prairie 5-2, but stayed alive with a 6-4 win over Carlos.

Mason Swegarden pitched three scoreless innings in the opening tilt and left with an 8-0 lead, while the Angels had quality innings from Trevor Tappe, Connor McLeod and Doug Dickey.

On Saturday night, the Angels lost to Long Praire 5-2 with Brock Johnson taking the loss with seven innings of work. 

Chris Gilson pitched the final two frames in the loss.

On Sunday the Angels defeated the Carlos Cougars 6-4. Swegarden went seven innings to pick up the win and Connor McLeod pitched the final two and earned the save. 

DL will face Bluffton Friday at 8 p.m. in Perham (location of all 14C games) in an elimination game.

The victor will move on to face Bertha at 5 p.m. Saturday, with the winner advancing to state and the right to play for the 14C championship against Long Prairie later that evening.

Bertha beat Nimrod 4-1, but fell to Long Prairie 7-6 in the state berth game.

In Region 16C action, Pelican Rapids earned the first state berth, with Fergus Falls to await the winner of Urbank and Brandon for the play-in game.
