Bombers blank Bears 18-0

WAUBUN — The Waubun Bombers shutout the Clearbrook-Gonvick Bears 18-0 behind 195 yards rushing on 29 carries by quarterback Jordan Spaeth Thursday evening in non-conference, intersection football.

“So proud of our effort,” Waubun Head Coach Paul Clark said. “Our boys gave up a lot of pounds to Clearbrook-Gonvick but wore them down with guts and determination.”

Due to a number of players not playing for the Bombers due to various team rule infractions, the effort was more impressive showing the depth in the roster of a shorthanded Bomber team.

“We certainly showed that we have the guts to compete with anyone,” said Clark.

Spaeth scored on a three-yard run to get Waubun on the board in the second quarter.

Ryan Weber added a 19-yard run in the fourth quarter and recovered a Bears’ fumble in the end zone for Waubun’s final score of the game. The Bombers tacked on a two-point conversion for the 18-0 final.

Waubun held the Bears to 94 yard rushing, while gaining a whopping 312. Clearbrook-Gonvick had 48 passing yards to the Bombers’ 42 in a game Waubun did not need to throw the ball.

“Defense was the key,” said Clark. “We sure won the field position battle because of a salty D. I don't remember them crossing mid-field much, other than a couple drives. I like the fact that the few defensive mistakes we made were very correctable mistakes. Our boys knew what they did wrong and what they needed to do to correct them.”

Weber had 89 yards and a score on 13 carries.

Spaeth was picked off twice.

Waubun had 354 total yards in the game to the Bear’s 142.
