Football: Hornets hang on for victory over Park Rapids

FRAZEE — Hesston Bachmann scored his first of two touchdowns from 73-yards out on the first play from scrimmage for the Frazee football team and the Hornets hung on to win a tight 26-23 game over Park Rapids Area Friday night.

“Wow, what a night,” Head Coach Jim Rader said.

Rader called the game a classic David versus Goliath match-up, as Frazee represents one of the smaller 2A teams in the state and Park Rapids is a 3A school twice Frazee’s size.

“Our kids played with heart, intensity and unity,” said Rader. “It was truly a total team effort.”

Frazee built a 20-0 lead by halftime on a 52-yard touchdown pass from Bachmann to Austin Torma at 11:52 of the second quarter, followed by a Tanner Bachmann 23-yard touchdown run at 4:58 and a two-point conversion catch by Tyler Utke.

Hesston Bachmann ran 19 times for 176 yards and two scores. He was 4-8 passing for 96 yards and a score.

Tanner Bachmann gained 48 yards on the ground on 15 carries and a score. He also completed one pass attempt for 20 yards.

“The stats may show some individuals accumulating yards and touchdowns, or tackles and fumble recoveries, but this team accomplished what they did because they played together selflessly.”

Park Rapids turned the tables in the second half scoring all of the Panthers’ 23 points late, 16 in the fourth quarter capitalizing on both two-point conversions.

Heston Bachmann scored Frazee’s game-winner at 10:01 of the fourth quarter on an eight-yard run to give the Hornets what appeared to be a comfortable 26-7 advantage

Park Rapids rallied when Panther senior quarterback Jordan McCollum engineered two scoring drives hitting fellow-senior wide receiver Derek Porozinski from 40 yards out at 8:12 and from 15 yards for the Panther’s final score at 3:33.

Frazee allowed 277 yards of offense to the Panthers. The Hornets gained 347 yards, 251 on the ground.

Garrett Malstrom led the Hornet defenders with 12 tackles, five solo and recovered a fumble.

Frazee hits the road to Warroad next week. The two teams have met twice in the playoffs recently splitting those two games. The most recent being a 58-28 win for Frazee at home in the first round of the playoffs in 2012.
