Ortloff places fourth at state wrestling
Albert Lea senior Garrett Aldrich was the undoing of Braydon Ortloff in the 145-pound bracket handing the Detroit Lakes junior two of his three losses in an impressive season that ended in fourth place at the Minnesota Class AA State wrestling tournament Saturday night at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
Aldrich and Ortloff met in the quarterfinals after DL’s top finisher opened with a 10-6 decision over Logan Nelson, a sophomore from Litchfield.
Ortloff, the Section 8AA champion, built an 8-3 lead after two periods and held off Nelson, who closed to within a takedown at 8-6 in the final minute.
Ortloff was defeated 7-2 by Aldrich in quarterfinal, but remained alive after pinning Toby Semler of Marshall (Fall 2:51) in wrestlebacks.
His win streak continued with an 11-7 decision over Kendall Sandifer, Jr. of Richfield and Ortloff qualified for the third place match with a 3-1 decision over Kasson-Mantorville’s Isaac Haman.
After Aldrich’s quarterfinal victory over Ortloff, he was defeated 12-2 by eventual state champion Tyler Wagener of Waconia.
Aldrich defeated Hibbing’s AJ Bethea 5-3 to force the rematch with Ortloff, which he won in a much closer match 8-6.
Ortloff placed at state for the second time in three appearances. He finished sixth at 106-pounds in 2014.
Ortloff ends the year with an impressive record of 32-3.
Section 145 runner-up Chance Hinrichs of Bemidji was pinned at 5:25 by Luis Cirilo of St. Paul Johnson in the first round and was denied a wrestleback when Cirilo was pinned by Wagener.
Albert Lea wrestlers continued to be a thorn in the side of the DL duo when sophomore Zach Glazier defeated Detroit Lakes junior Austin Baker in the first round of the 152-pound bracket. Baker trailed 2-1 after the first period. Glazier scored five straight points and closed out a 7-2 decision. Baker was eliminated in a 5-1 decision to Gage Giles of New Prague and finished the season with a record of 31-8.
Section 8AA 152-pound section champion Josh Bernier of Thief River Falls advanced after a 6-3 decision over St. Cloud Apollo senior Alex Pachan but lost to McCoy Tekautz of Lewiston-Altura/Rushford/Peterson 10-4 in the quarterfinals. Bernie was eliminated in the first round of consolation by Conner Denman of Cloquet 5-3 in overtime.
