BASEBALL: Hornets open season with victory over Cardinals

Frazee opened the baseball season with a 5-1 victory over Staples-Motley in the first round of an eight-team tournament in Park Rapids Friday afternoon.

The Hornets never trailed after taking a 1-0 first inning lead when Rory Drewes scored on a Jon Hoffmann double.

Frazee starter Thomas Stenger pitched five scoreless innings to let the Hornet offense get going. Stenger fanned eight Cardinals and issued only one walk.

Tanner Tappe flew out to left to bring Logan Wacker home with the eventual game-winning run in the third inning.

Frazee added runs in the fourth and fifth. Courtesy runner Cody Pausch scored on a wild pitch in the fourth for a 3-1 lead.

Jaden Guhlke and Wacker unearned on an error by Reid Busker on a  Hoffmann ground ball to third base.

Hoffmann pitched the final two innings. Busker doubled in Thomas Kossan in the sixth to avoid the shutout.

Trey Skeesick pitched all six innings for the Cardinals allowing five runs, three earned, on nine hits. He walked one and struck out two.

Hoffmann gave up one run on two hits. He struck out four and walked two. Stenger and Hoffmann combined for a dozen strikeouts in the game.

Frazee (1-0) will play games at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. as the tournament continues Saturday, April 8.

The Hornets defeated Menahga 3-1 in the semifinal behind a strong performance on the hill by Nick Endersby. Endersby pitched all but the final out of the game allowing just one run on five hits. He struck out six batters and walked two to pick up the win.

Tanner Tappe earned the save inducing a game-ending grounder with the tying runs on first and second base.

Stenger and Gabe Drewes each had two hits for the Hornets.

Park Rapids won a tight 1-0 game in the championship final. Sam Eystad pitched a two-hitter to make a single run in the second inning stand up. Frazee starter Logan Wacker allowed only five hits in six innings of work.
