Three Hornet girls, one relay headed to state

Three Frazee girls and the 4x100m relay team will represent Frazee at state after a strong showing at the Section 8A track and field championships in Bagley Saturday.

Freshman Paige Ziegler claimed a 100m hurdles section championship with a winning time of 15.49 to win by 11-hundredths of a second over Crookston’s Aleece Durbin (15.60). Ziegler added a section runner-up and state-qualifying triple jump of 35-01.50 finishing behind only Abigail McGlynn of West Marshall.

Fellow freshman Paige Oswald claimed a section championship winning the 200m dash in 26.81. She also placed 14th in the 400 (1:07.69).

Senior Cassidy Ziegler placed second in the 100m dash running 13.03 and was the third Hornet individual to qualify for state. Red Lake County’s Zoe Russillo won the event in 12.94. Ziegler also placed fifth in the high jump (5-00) and finished fourth in the 200m dash (27.15).

Frazee’s 4x100m relay team of Ellie Reierson, Paige Oswald, Paige Ziegler and Cassidy Ziegler ran 50.86 to break the Section 8A record (50.99) in the event, a mark set by East Grand Forks that had stood since 1992.

Freshman Jaryn Johannsen just missed state in the 300m hurdles placing fourth in 48.63. The state qualifying time is 46.82. She also placed sixth in long jump (15-05.50).

Junior Ellie Morgan placed fourth in the mile and 14th in the two-mile. Junior teammate Megan Danielson was ninth in the two-mile and 10th in the mile.

Seventh-grader Rylee Moore placed 13th in high jump (4-06). Fellow seventh-grader Tiffany Lawrence was 14th in pole vault (6-10). Senior Hailey Ellingson finished her career with a 14th place discus throw (80-09) and sophomore Olivia Erickson placed 14th in the shot put (29-03.25).

The Hornet girls placed third in team standings with 68. Pelican Rapids won the title with 82.5, one-half point ahead of Park Rapids Area (82).

On the boys’ side, senior Anthony Santos had Frazee’s best individual finish with a fourth place shot put (44-01.75). Teammate Vincent Helmers, a sophomore, placed sixth (43-08.50). Santos added a 10th place discus throw of 110-11.

Sophomore Joby Geifer placed eighth in the 300m hurdles (45.17). The eighth-grade duo of Alex Beck (11:33.45) and Christian Carlson (11:42.72) placed 10th and 11th in the two-mile.

Junior Mike Miller finished 11th in the triple jump (38-02.50) with freshman teammate Cole Fleisher in 13th (37-07).

Frazee had two top five relay teams. Caleb Drescher, Fleisher, Miller and Caleb Wutzke placed fifth in the 4x200 (1:37.33). Drescher, Geifer, Miller and Wutzke placed fourth in the 4x400m relay (3:42.68.

Frazee placed 14th in team rankings with 18 points. Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton scored 126-5 to win handily.

The Minnesota Class A state girls track and field championship will be held June 9-10 at Hamline University in St. Paul.
