Mahnomen escapes Lake Park on late touchdown

Lake Park-Audubon held a two-point lead with less than four minutes to play, but Jon Starkey scored from six yards out in the waning 90 seconds to give the Mahnomen Indians a 40-34 victory in Lake Park Friday night.

Teddy Schauer found Grant Pederson on a seven-yard touchdown pass to give the Raiders a 34-32 lead late in the fourth quarter.

Izaiah Asher returned the ensuing kickoff to midfield and sprinted 30 yards on the first play to the LP-A 20 to give Mahnomen a good look at the end zone for the win.

Starkey and Dan Snetsinger got inside the 10 on short runs and faced second-and-goal from the six. Starkey scored the game-winner on the next play with a dive run with one-minute, 24-seconds to play. Asher converted the deuce on a pitch around the left end for the 40-34 lead.

LP-A had 61 yards to travel with one timeout, but Mahnomen pounced on a fumbled shotgun snap to preserve the victory.

The teams duked it out early trading first quarter scores, an Asher 41-yard run for Mahnomen and a six-yard pass from Schauer to Pederson. Both teams converted passing PATs for a tie score 8-8.

Mahnomen responded to a 50-yard punt by Marcus Dickelman-Stassen that pinned the Indians at their own one-yard line with a 99-yard drive for the score. Asher had the big play with a 41-yard run. Starkey scored on a 29-yard run and converted the deuce to go up 16-8.

LP-A’s Jack Osborne sprinted 63 yard to paydirt on the next play from scrimmage but a two-point pass from Schauer to Carter Raeen failed, to keep Mahnomen in the lead by two points 16-14.

Schauer struck again in the final minute of the half connecting with Dickelman-Stassen from four-yards out to head to halftime leading Mahnomen 20-14.

The Raiders took the second half kickoff and marched 65 yards to a three-yard scoring run by Raaen and he also ran for two points to give the Raiders a 28-16 advantage four minutes into the third quarter. Schauer broke a tackle on a 49-yard run to get the Raiders in scoring position.

Starkey left the game on the next Mahnomen drive with an apparent leg injury. Senior Dan Snetsinger took over under center and led the Indians into the red zone before Starkey returned.

Asher broke contain around the right side and scored from the 10. Starkey converted the point-after run to pull within four points 28-24 with 2:30 remaining in the third quarter.

The Mahnomen defense stiffened and set up a chance for the lead. Asher again went around the right side to get to the Raider 20-yard line. Snetsinger moved nine yards to the Raider 11. Starkey fumbled the handoff to Snetsinger on the next play but broke a tackle on third-and-short to get inside the LP-A five-yard line. Starkey used the sneak to score on the ensuing snap to put Mahnomen up. Snetsinger converted on a two-point run to go ahead 32-28

Schauer was effective in the passing game finding Pederson for a big gain inside the Mahnomen 25-yard line but left the game with an apparent injury only to return two plays later.

The Raiders faced fourth-and-two at the 16 and Schauer got the Indians’ defensive line to jump offsides but the play was negated by a Raider timeout.

LP-A lined up in trips left and Schauer converted with a short pass to Dickelman-Stassen at the eight-yard line.

Two unsuccessful dive plays forced third and goal from the seven. Schauer hit Pederson for the go-ahead score on a fade pass that Pederson leapt up to take away from Mahnomen defenders for the 34-32 lead with 3:20 to play.

The victory extended Mahnomen’s win streak to nine games over the Raiders. The last LP-A win came in Mahnomen in 2009 (28-6).

Schauer took over at quarterback for the Raiders after starter Ryan Voge was under concussion protocol after last week’s game versus Fosston.

Mahnomen (4-1) has won four consecutive games and returns home to face Badger/Greenbush-Middle River (1-4) Friday, Oct. 6. LP-A falls to 3-3 and hosts 4-1 Red Lake County.
