Laker swimmers reach finals in seven events, bust six school records
Detroit Lakes swimmers will make appearances in more than half of the state finals qualifying for seven events on championship day Saturday, Nov. 18 at the University of Minnesota Freeman Aquatic Center.
The team has broken records habitually this season and that did not change on the biggest stage.
“It's a happy day for the team,” said head coach Carol McCarthy. “Each and everyone at this meet has worked so very hard, all of them great athletes and part of Lakers’ sports history now.”
Six school records went down Friday: the 200-medley and 400-free relays, Syd Gulon in the 500, 100-free and 100-breaststroke, and Ella Henderson in the 50-free.
Henderson had held both the 50 and 100 school records until Gulon broke the 100 on the first leg of the 400-free relay at sections and again Friday in the same position.
Gulon placed fifth in the 500-freestyle and eighth in the breaststroke to lead the team with two individual places in the championship finals. Her breaststroke time knocked off the school mark of Melissa Paakh from 2009 (1:08.02).
Both relay teams already held the former mark and Gulon held the 500 record, while Henderson has owned both sprint marks since last season.
Jennifer Tracy placed eighth to make the A finals in the butterfly.
Both Gulon and Tracy started off the 400-freestyle relay team with Lucy Steinke and Ella Henderson that placed seventh in prelims in a time of 3:38.64 to swim for a state title Saturday.
The team set a new 400 school record at sections of 3:42.85 and blew it away Friday with a new mark of 3:38.64.
The top eight finishes advance to the A finals; ninth through 16th move on the B finals.
The 200-medley team of Josie Retz, Gulon, Tracy and Henderson placed 11th swimming a prelim time of 1:51.27.
Tracy finished 12th in the individual medley (2:13.72); Henderson swam 24.70 to finish 14th in the 50-free.
Other preliminary finishes: Henderson 21st in the 100-free (54.91); Kaitlyn Peterson 25th in the 200-free (2:06.12) and Evan Westrum 28th in the butterfly (1:03.00).
The finals will begin Saturday, Nov. 18 at noon.
