DL boys' golf stakes claim as favorites in section -- Lakers win Pre-Section meet by 16 strokes; Bergquist and Brodsho share medalist honors

The bar has been set and the Detroit Lakes boys' golf team is peering down at the rest of the pack.

The measuring stick for the Section 8-2A golf meet was completed Wednesday in the Pre-Section meet held at Longbow Golf Course in Walker, with the Lakers winning by 16 strokes with a score of 294 -- six-over par.

Roseau was the next best with a 310, while Hawley was a distant third with a 328.

Two Lakers also shared medalist honors with a one-under par 71 in seniors Ben Bergquist and Mike Brodsho, while Ryan Kuehne tied for fourth with a three-over 75 and Adam Thielen eighth with a five-over 77 to round out DL's team score.

"It was the first time any of our golfers played Longbow, so it's nice to see our score of a 294," said DL head coach Bob Gorden. "Some of our guys maybe played the course a bit conservative since it was the first time they played it.

"I would like that score on May 27 (the date of the Section meet), but it was really just another tournament for us."

The Pre-Section victory was just another meet where the Lakers posted some prime scores. They finished as the runner-up in the 24-team University of Minnesota tournament last weekend.

DL's meet average of 304.5 is tops in the state in Class 2A and has been the best meet-average in a long time for a Laker team after four meets.

The key to the good start has been depth. Already the Lakers have had five different players shoot low on the team.

"It's going to be tough finding our six guys for the section meet because we have up to 10 competing for those spots," Gorden said. "We could almost field two solid teams in meets. It's a real good problem to have."

Included in that depth is experience which ranges from four to five years of varsity players who are seniors.

So far, Bergquist, Brodsho, Thielen, Kuehne and Josh Herzog have been a consistent five.

The sixth spot has been heavily contested by several others, including senior Ben Osowski and underclassmen Connor Hedstrom and Karter Smith.

At the U of M tournament, which features several Class 3A powers, taking runner-up position to Mankato West by just two strokes, showed DL it could be in contention every week.

"That showed us we can play with basically anyone in the state," Gorden added.

In the Pre-Section meet, even a sub-80 didn't count as one of DL's top four scores (which goes into the team final mark), with Herzog's 79 being the fifth-best score.

"That shows we have some talent," the DL coach commented. "And these guys will not get complacent. I see they are focused and having those seniors provides us with some good leadership."

The Lakers took part in the Grand Rapids two-day meet this past weekend and will play in the White Bear Lake meet Monday and the Jordan meet Tuesday -- which is the site of the Class 2A state meet in June.
