DL spikers go 13-10 and ready for playoffs

Outside hitter Brianna Posch goes up for a kill against Fergus Falls Monday night.

The Detroit Lakes volleyball team gained some nice momentum heading into the sub-section playoffs with a 3-1 win over visiting Fergus Falls Monday.

The Lakers also saw one of the section favorites in Perham Tuesday, losing to the Yellowjackets 3-0 Tuesday to wrap up the season with a record of 13-10.

The victory over Fergus Falls (25-21, 27-25, 21-25, 25-21) overshadows the season finale loss in Perham, though, as the Lakers got a shot of confidence for the playoffs.

"It was a sub-section match-up and to get a win in the manner in which we did helps keep our confidence and determination strong," said DL head coach Beth Leighton. "It was also senior night and what a great way to cap off a special night."

A trio of seniors played strong at the net with Emily Lindquist pounding down 12 kills, followed by Morgan Lof's and Alycia Heisler's nine apiece.

Senior Abby Hoganson finished with 18 assists at setter, while Rachel Shane had 15.

"We kept a good level of intensity throughout the match, we had a few dips and against a good team like Fergus Falls, they took advantage of those opportunities," Leighton said. "But the Lakers kept their focus and found ways to come up with the win."

Hoganson also had a solid night at the serving line, going 15-15 with one ace, while Lindquist was 12-12 with one ace serve.

The following night, the Yellowjackets proved to be a tough match, as Perham won 25-15, 25-22 and 26-24.

"If you look at the games we lost in three, however, what you don't see is that the difference in scores from the last two games was five points, or the fact that three games kept us in the gym until 9 p.m.," Leighton said. "The girls battled and made some good plays, but unfortunately, came up just a bit short."

Heisler led the way for DL with seven kills, while Dani Labine was 12-16 in defensive digs.

"On the Lakers' side of the net, unforced errors really hurt us," the DL coach said. "At the serving line, we sent the ball long and on serve-receive, we struggled to get the ball up to our setter consistently.

"The great thing is that all of those pieces are things we can control and have controlled, so I am excited to get back to the gym."

The section play-in game will be Wednesday, Oct. 22, while the quarterfinal game will be Friday, Oct. 24, at the high seed.

The semifinals are Tuesday, Oct. 28, and the finals Thursday, Oct. 30, at a neutral site.
