Waubun bombs Norman County East; moves on to Section 6 9-man finals

WAUBUN - After beating Norman County East 70-6 Saturday night in the Section 6 9-man football semifinals, the question left for Waubun is how it will fare against much tougher competition.

A repeat date against Ada-Borup for the Section 6 title is set for Halloween at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks,

That test will be a good measuring stick for a Bombers team that made the state 9-man championship game last season. Kickoff is at 3 p.m.

Back on Sept. 26, Waubun squeaked by the Cougars 38-35 by scoring two touchdowns in the last six minutes of the game.

Saturday's game against Norman County East prepared the offense - at least on the ground - for the next task at hand.

The Bombers didn't attempt a pass and hasn't attempted one for a few weeks.

Waubun coach Jason McCloskey said the lack of passing opportunities won't hurt his side.

"If everyone thinks we can't hurt them through our passing game, they better watch us," McCloskey said.

He added that they don't pass by choice due to the number of points the Bombers rack up early in games. The standard operating procedure is that a team doesn't try to pass once the outcome of the game is pretty much determined.

However, McCloskey said that the game won't come down to passing, but how the offensive and defensive lines matchup against one another.

"It just comes down to the play of the line on both sides of the ball," he said.

It didn't take Waubun long to get on top by a large margin. The Bombers were up 21-0 by the end of the first quarter.

Izaak Bray scored the first touchdown with a 6-yard run. His 31-yard rush up the gut on Waubun's first play from scrimmage drove the ball to Norman County East's 25. Floyd DeGroat took it to the 6-yard line.

After the Eagles punted on their next possession, Waubun's offense wasn't on the field for too long.

On the first play after the punt, Tyler Voss ran through a hole on the right and was free-and-clear a few yards past the line of scrimmage. Voss went untouched from there for a 54-yard score.

The final score of the first quarter came from a bit of deception. Quarterback Dustin Spaeth ran a naked bootleg from a few yards out.

No one on the Eagles' defense noticed when he faked a handoff and started rolling right. By that time, it was too late as Spaeth scooted in.

Waubun's defense also got into the scoring action.

Norman County East's offense tried some trickery of its own. A double reverse pass put the ball into the hands of Matt Anderson. Anderson hesitated for a second despite being chased by the Bombers' pass rush.

Getting a lick on Anderson, Voss knocked the ball loose. Bray picked it up and ran in 19 yards for a touchdown.

The defensive touchdown opportunity surprised Voss a bit. He said that he just saw the ball, picked it up and ran.

It was all instinct.

Waubun ended up with a 42-0 halftime lead.

It went to 49-0 on Waubun's first play to start the second half.

DeGroat took the handoff and made his way 54 yards down the right sideline. He kept his bearings and stayed inbounds all the way to the end zone despite the traffic ahead of him.

All totaled, Waubun scored 10 touchdowns on the night.

The Eagles lone score came in the fourth while the Bombers had most of their reserves in.

Ryan Lampton caught a 14-yard pass in the corner of the end zone from Alex Sather.
