Laker divers pace Detroit Lakes in season opener; Oak wins 200 IM

The Detroit Lakes divers gave a big boost to the Lakers' swimming and diving season opener, by capturing the top three places Saturday in the Fergus Falls Invite.

Finishing with a score of 146 points and a fifth-place position out of seven teams, the Laker diving trio of Jon Melgaard (190.20 points), Justin George (155.5) and Aaron Colby (148.05) took the top three places, respectively, to capture a total of 41 points.

Add in the ninth-place finish by Logan Peterick, and the DL diving team contributed a total of 45 points in the meet.

"Diving proved to be our strongest event at the meet," said DL head coach Rian Heimark. "The team did very well and I was pleased with the races the boys started the season with. This meet really showed us where we stand compared to our closest competition."

Quillan Oak also nabbed a gold slot, winning the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:14.82. He also took silver in the 100 breaststroke with a mark of 1:06.32.

Brandon Olson missed medal contention by placing fourth in both the 200 IM and 500 freestyle.

"Matt Weiss swam some great times in both the 100 butterfly (1:05.65) and backstroke (1:07.09), and I am looking forward to what that means for him throughout the season," Heimark said.

The DL coach was impressed with his newcomers, as well.

"Between the times of the new swimmers and the times of our veteran swimmers, we now have a solid base to continue the rest on the season on," Heimark said.

The best relay finish came in the 400 freestyle relay, with the foursome of Olson, Weiss, Travis King and Oak finishing fourth with a time of 3:50.78.

The Lakers will be in Thief River Falls Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. start, after swimming in a triangular Tuesday in Moorhead (results will be in Sunday's Detroit Lakes Tribune).
