Cards' Riewer too much for Detroit Lakes boys' basketball

Kyle Muckenhirn (50) grabs a rebound against Crosby-Ironton last week.

The No. 5 Class 2A ranked Staples-Motley Cardinals usually don't need help for a win, but the Detroit Lakes boys' basketball squad was a bit too much in a giving mood Tuesday evening inside Ralph Anderson Gym.

The Lakers committed 28 turnovers to get behind the eight ball against a very potent Cardinal offensive unit, which was led by junior guard Jordan Riewer's 26 points and five three pointers, resulting in an 86-64 victory.

"We knew coming in we would have to play well against Staples-Motley," said DL head coach Robb Flint. "Of our 28 turnovers, 12 or 13 of them were on travel calls and that just shows a lack of fundamentals and a lackadaisical effort.

"Most of our turnovers were pretty much unforced ones."

By getting the ball back from the Lakers 28 times, S-M was able to convert many of those into points. The Cardinals' perimeter shooting was on, with nine three pointers on the night.

But at the start of the game, the Lakers' defense seemed to be up for the challenge, Flint said.

"The first four or five minutes, the effort was there and we were able to deny Riewer the ball," Flint said. "We were trying to wear him down."

But the junior guard paced the Cardinals to a 45-31 halftime lead, which was aided by Gunner Johnson -- who finished with 17 points -- and Derek Wolhowe with 11.

The Lakers had 11 different players find the scorebook. They were led by Joe Mollberg and Reed Oistad, who each had 10 points.

"We are still looking for six to eight players to step up," Flint said. "We are so inconsistent now."

The last two losses for the Lakers (3-0) have been affected by their high amount of turnovers, with a combined 54 in the last two outings.

"We haven't helped ourselves any," Flint said. "But these problems are correctable, and it might take until after Christmas to do that with the inexperience we have."

Oistad also led DL in rebounding with seven, while Josh Stalberger had five.

The Lakers will continue their Mid-State Conference streak when they travel to Wadena-Deer Creek Friday for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
