Laker swimming and diving team collects several event victories

Detroit Lakes freshman Quillan Oak is steadily carving himself a niche' on the Laker boys' swimming and diving team -- that of a first-place swimmer.

Oak collected four more victories in DL's last two meets, winning both of his races in Moorhead Tuesday and in Thief River Falls Thursday.

Fellow freshman Brandon Olson also was a gold-winner in Thief River Falls, taking each of the 200 and 500 freestyle events.

The Lakers finished with 175 team points in Moorhead, behind first-place Fergus Falls with a 256.5 and Moorhead with a 217.5.

"The boys didn't swim as well as they did in Fergus Falls (the season opener), but there wasn't anything wrong with the effort they gave," said DL head coach Rian Heimark. "Losing a day of practice due to the weather didn't help matters."

Oak won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:14.98, while finishing first in the 100 breaststroke with a mark of 1:06.82.

Senior Michael Bogda also had a strong performance in his first meet of the season, placing second in a pair of events in the 50 freestyle at 25.01 and the 100 freestyle with a sub-minute 56.67.

Diver Jon Melgaard also was a runner-up with a score of 185.45.

The 400 freestyle relay team of Bogda, Olson, Matt Weiss and Oak were also second with a combined time of 3:47.31.

Olson had a leg up in each of the 200 and 500 freestyle events in Thief River Falls, winning both, while Oak was victorious in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke.

Weiss won the 100 backstroke and took silver in the 100 butterfly, while Bogda won the 100 freestyle and second in the 200 butterfly.

The four also claimed the 400 freestyle relay, but with all that, DL still fell to the Prowlers 92-75.

The Lakers will host the Spuds of Moorhead Tuesday, Jan. 6, at 6 p.m.
