Detroit Lakes girls' hoops splits in tourney

The Laker girls' basketball team may have had to settle for second place after a 49-40 loss to Princeton in the Sartell Tournament championship Tuesday, but DL's head coach liked his team's performance nonetheless.

"If we could have knocked down a few more of our perimeter shots, we could have had a chance to win -- but I was pleased with the effort," said Laker head coach Mike Hoganson on Wednesday.

Princeton senior center Katie Lobery -- who has already committed to play for the Minnesota Golden Gophers next season -- led her team to victory with 17 points.

"The game plan was to mix up the defensive looks, and I was very pleased with their effort," Hoganson added.

Senior Robin Hutchinson was the only Laker to score in double digits Tuesday, with 10 points. Just behind her was Taylor Tschider with 9 points, and Abby Hoganson finished with 7. Morgan Lof and Jenny Matter each scored 4 points.

Rounding out the scoring for the Lakers were Dani Labine with 3 points, Ashlyn Jasken chipped in 2 points and Dana Bentley had 1 point.

The Laker girls had a much more successful outing Monday against Sartell, scoring a decisive 48-33 victory over the home team.

"After a slow start, the girls played inspired basketball, led by Chelsea Bjerke and Morgan Lof," said Hoganson.

Hoganson added: "The girls' goal coming was to win the championship, so winning the first game was huge."

Lof led the way with 15 points -- 10 of those coming in the first half -- followed by Bjerke's 8 points.

Also scoring for the Lakers were Abby Hoganson and Dani Labine, with 7 points each, Jenny Matter with 6 and Robin Hutchinson, 5 points.

The Lakers resume play this Thursday, with a home game against Bemidji. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
