Detroit Lakes girls' basketball pick up momentum with win over Wadena-Deer Creek

DETROIT LAKES - The Laker girls' basketball (13-9) team is starting to showcase their strengths as the Lakers won 58-32 Friday night against Wadena-Deer Creek (14-8).

"Any time we pass well we shoot well," head coach Mike Hoganson said was the key to their success. "We kept giving it to Morgan (Lof) and she kept delivering."

The Lakers came out strong building a 30-19 lead and a 13-4 run at the end of the first half -- which was capped by a Jenny Matter last second shot.

"We matched up well with their guards," said Hoganson of the strategy. "We got perimeter shots off and our posts cleaned up."

Much of the success was attributed to Lof's dominant post play as she led the Lakers in scoring with 18 points.

"We were working it around more," commented Lof. "Our guards did a good job getting it in to Taylor (Tschider) and I."

With 17 minutes left in the second-half the duo of Tschider and Lof hooked up on a crisp play.

The ball was being passed around the perimeter when it came into the hands of Tschider who made a few dribbles and delivered a bounce pass to Lof -- she proceeded to finish with a strong lay-up for two.

"We knocked down just enough outside shots to get pressure on them," explained Hoganson. "That allowed us to open up our inside game and pass to our posts."

Free throw shooting is what allowed for the Lakers to expand the lead as they shot 63-percent from the line versus W-DC's 36-percent.

"We kept the pressure up all night," said Hoganson. "It was a great team effort."

A team effort is exactly what it was as 10 different Lakers scored.

The Lakers wrap up the season at Hawley (12-8) Thursday night with a three-seed in the section playoffs in their pocket with a win.
